IP Fragmentation v1.0

In this lab exercise, the MPLS VPN infrastructure will be used to carry customer traffic between sites. Two customers are connected to the MPLS VPN backbone. In this exercise you will work only on Customer A.

Customer A has two sites connected to different POPs. One site has a Server and the other site hosts a Client PC, as indicated in the figure.

In the exercise, you will observe maximum transmission unit (MTU) of the FTP packets going from Server to Client. At the beginning you will observe MTU in the MPLS VPN environment, where customer packet gets two MPLS encapsulation headers.
After that you will enable GRE tunnel between Customer A sites (POPs) and observe how MTU has changed.
Finally, you will protect tunnel traffic by using IPsec.

Objectives

Upon finishing this exercise, you will be able to:
Observe MTU of IP packets in MPLS VPN environment

  • Observe MTU of IP packets in GRE tunnel
  • Observe MTU of IP packets in GRE tunnel protected with IPsec
